Effects of Obesity Management by Behavior Modification in Overweight Adolescent Girls

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the effects of behavior modification for managing overweight among adolescent girls. Behavior modification, in this study, consisted of self-monitoring, changing patterns of life-style and attitudes,
teaching
nutrition and physical activities, and asking personal help. Forty seven subjects were selected from one girls' middle school located in Seoul. Seventeen girls participated in the behavior modification program by joining 60-90 minute group
session
weekly. The aerobic exercise program was given to 16 girls 3 times per week with 60 minutes each time. Forteen girls participated in both behavior modification and aerobic exercise. These interventions continued for 8 weeks from October 17 to
December
10, 1994.
The data were obtained before and after intervention by measuring degree of obesity, body weight, blood pressure, serum lipid, percent body fat, and waist to hip ratio (WHR). In analyzing the data, paired t-test, repeated measures ANOVA, and
Scheffe
test were adopted.
@ES The results were as follows ;
@EN 1. Among the behavior modification group, degree of obesity, body weight, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, TC (total cholesterol), LDLC( low density lipoprotein cholesterol), HDLC (high density lipoprotein cholesterol), % body fat, fat
mass,
and WHR were significantly decreased after 8 weeks.
2. The aerobic exercise group showed significantly decreased degree of obesity, body weight, diastolic blood pressure, TC, TG (Triglyceride), LDLC, % body fat, fat mass after 8 weeks.
3. Degree of obesity, body weight, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, TC, TG, % body fat, and fat mass after 8 weeks were significantly decreased among those who participated in both behavior modification and aerobic exercise.
4. There were significant differences in diastolic blood pressure, TG and HDLC among three groups before and after intervention.
These findings indicate that behavior modification might be effective in decreasing degree of obesity, body weight, blood pressure, serum lipid, and percent body fat and in inhibiting the decreased in fat free mass like aerobic exercise.
Accordingly,
behavior modification cen be adopted by school nurses as an effective strategy for managing overvieight among adolescent girls.
